Prong
'Scorpio Rising'
(Locomotive Music)
An impressive 17 years into their career, Prong have produced an album that at times compromises their thrash metal past. While their trademark grinding but melodic power is still evident on tracks like 'Detacthed' and 'Regal', there are a few surprising moments where the band seems to soften up to a rather commercial nu metal core, particularly evident on 'Embrace The Depth'.
Combining comtemporary metal elements, industrial and even a little hardcore, Prong have modernised their sound to bring it to a new audience, but the question is whether that decision will also appeal to the band's older fans. A band has to move with the times, but that doesn't mean dropping their heaviness or attitude, which is what Prong have done in the lighter songs; some of these tracks wouldn't sound out of place on Stone Sour releases, while others would be just at home on early Fear Factory records. There are some nice guitar hooks, but overall this album is not quite what one expect from a band who have inspired acts such as Pantera and Ice T
